Instagram unveils its one-tap messaging app called Bolt

Facebook-owned Instagram has quietly launched an app called Bolt, which gives you the ability to send photo and video messages to your friends with one-tap. This is similar to Snapchat, as well as and Facebook’s recent Slingshot app.

The Bolt app, which will soon arrive on iOS and Android, gives users the option to post photos with optional text captions which, like Snapchat, disappear after viewing. An Instagram or Facebook account is not needed to sign in, just a phone number, which then gains access to your contact list. To use Bolt you’ll simply tap on a friend’s avatar and use the Bolt camera to snap a photo or short video. Content does not stay in the camera roll, but is siloed within the app to ensure privacy.

Instagram notes on its site that the app is “available in selected countries,” with the initial rollout hitting New Zealand, Singapore and South Africa. “Bolt is the fastest way to share an image or a video — just one tap to capture and send. We decided to start small with Bolt, in just a handful of countries, to make sure we can scale while maintaining a great experience. We expect to roll it out more widely soon.”
