PlayStation Mobile for Android is no more, says Sony

Sony is deprecating support for its poorly-marketed, underwhelming source for game content, PlayStation Mobile, on Android smartphones and tablets. Originally meant as a place for premium and unique games on Android, PlayStation Mobile turned into a repository of titles that could be purchased cheaper on the Play Store. Only one game, rymdkapsel, really gained recognition as a great PSM title, but it eventually came to the Play and App Stores, so the exclusivity period was largely for naught.

Sony won’t be shutting down the service entirely, but is not guaranteeing support for Android devices on Android 4.4.3 or above. Those on Android 4.4.2 and older will continue to use the service uninterrupted, according to a support document.

Even Nvidia, the creator of the gaming-oriented Shield series, has given up trying to push customers to an alternative app store. PlayStation Mobile was a good idea when Google Play Store’s dominance wasn’t assured.

In other Sony news, the company is giving up on the ebook reader market. Another Sony product line gone, unfortunately.
