TELUS adds 78,000 postpaid subscribers as customer-friendly strategy finds more takers

TELUS, which now has a stronghold as Canada’s second largest carrier, reported its Q2 results today. Wireless network revenues increased 6.1% to $1.48 billion and was attributed to “higher data usage as a result of a continued increase in smartphone adoption, the expansion of TELUS’ LTE network coverage and increased data roaming.”

TELUS’s total subscriber base to jumped in the quarter to 7,876,000, up 2.2 percent from the same period last year. Net postpaid additions were 78,000, higher than both the other incumbents, while churn improved by 13 basis points to 0.90%, far ahead of the pack. The company lost another 20,000 prepaid subscribers, but TELUS notes that “Higher-value postpaid subscribers represent 87 per cent of the total subscriber base.” Net income rose 33% over last year to $381 million.

Its subscriber numbers include sub-brands Koodo, which at last count had one millions subs. TELUS notes these subscriber numbers “exclude those of Public Mobile, Inc. which had approximately 212,000 prepaid subscribers at June 30, 2014.” Total TELUS wireless subscribers are actually now above eight million.

ARPU (Average Revenue Per User) also crept up a bit — $1.39 or 2.3% — to $62.51, from a year ago. Smartphone subscribers now represent 79 percent of TELUS’ postpaid wireless customers, up 8% from the same time last year. TELUS also notes that its LTE network now reaches more than 84% of Canada’s population, up from 74% last year.

Joe Natale, TELUS President and CEO said, “our industry-leading monthly postpaid wireless churn rate of 0.90 per cent matches our record low set eight years ago. Our consistent track record speaks for itself and as a result, more customers are choosing TELUS and embracing a network that can reliably support their ever-growing data needs.”
