Skype for iOS 8 adds interactive notifications

VoIP apps on iOS, unlike on Android, have never had the same advantages of Apple’s native dialler. Incoming calls, unless you’re using the app, show as regular notifications, which are easy to miss or comfortable to ignore.

While iOS 8 doesn’t change this access for VoIP apps, it does add actionable notifications, both from the Notification Centre and the lock screen, which Skype is using to its advantage.

Incoming voice and video calls can be answered or declined by swiping from the Notification Center and lock screen, while banner notifications can be pulled down to answer or decline. The same can be done with incoming text messages.

Skype is one of the first apps to truly take advantage of one of iOS 8’s best new features, and we’re hoping many other communications apps like Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, BBM, Kik and others will quickly follow suit.
