Facebook and Samsung reportedly collaborating on Facebook-exclusive smartphones

If it feels like you have been hearing the words ‘Facebook phone’ for years, it’s because you have. The smartphone industry has been peddling that one since 2011. We thought the HTC First, equipped with Facebook Home, would put things to rest, but this week brings yet more talk of a Facebook phone.

This time, the manufacturer in question is Samsung. 9to5 Google points to both the Korea Times and the Korea Herald in reporting Mark Zuckerberg met with Samsung officials recently to discuss a hardware partnership. The Korea Herald says Zuckerberg met with Samsung vice chairman Lee Jay-yong this week and had dinner with Sheryl Sandberg, as well as Shin Jong-kyun, head of mobile at Samsung.

The purpose of the meeting is rumoured to be the finalizing of details of Facebook-exclusive phones from Samsung. It’s not clear if these will be Facebook editions of popular smartphones Samsung already has in its portfolio, or if the company will be producing completely new devices for Facebook.
