Sony’s entire Xperia Z line will get Lollipop

Android lollipop

Today might be all about the iPad, but Android device manufacturers couldn’t care less about iOS 8.1 when Google’s Lollipop launch looms. In the midst of today’s Apple event, Sony has confirmed that its entire Xperia Z line will get the Lollipop upgrade.

This includes the Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia Z1, Xperia Z1S, Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia Z1 Compact, Xperia Z2, Xperia Z2 Tablet, Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3v, Xperia Z3 Compact and Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact.

As far as timing goes, Sony says Xperia Z Ultra GPE devices will be first to get 5.0, and promises more details on Lollipop’s arrival “soon.” Beyond that, other Xperia users will be stuck waiting until 2015 for the update. Sony says it plans to start with the core Xperia Z3 and Xperia Z2 series at the beginning of next year. All other devices will follow.

Motorola, the manufacturer of the new Nexus 6 smartphone, yesterday confirmed that the Moto X (1st and 2nd Gen), Moto G (1st and 2nd Gen), Moto G with 4G LTE, Moto E, Droid Ultra, Droid Maxx and Droid Mini, would all be getting the update. Unfortunately, the company has no time frame to offer just yet, as the timing “depends on [Motorola’s] partners’ support.”
