Google announces free one-minute calls to 25 countries through Hangouts

It’s been a long time since Google Hangouts was just for instant messaging and video chat, but Google is hoping to promote the application’s phone call functionality with a freebie that lasts through to the end of the year.

Google has supported free phone calls to the U.S. and Canada through Hangouts for a long time and now it’s adding free minute calls for 25 other countries. According to Google’s support pages, users will now receive the first minute of their call for free when calling to the 25 countries listed below:

  • Australia
  • Belgium
  • Brazil
  • Canada: Most calls will be free. A few destinations will cost USD 1 cent per minute after the first minute. The 1-cent rate may vary depending on the local currency. You can look up the cost through the calling credit page for your Google account.
  • China
  • Dominican Republic
  • France
  • Germany
  • India
  • Indonesia
  • Ireland
  • Italy
  • Japan
  • Mexico
  • Netherlands
  • Norway
  • Peru
  • Poland
  • Russia
  • South Korea
  • Spain
  • Sweden
  • Switzerland
  • United Kingdom
  • United States: Most calls will be free. A few destinations will cost USD 1 cent per minute after the first minute. The 1-cent rate may vary depending on the local currency. You can look up the cost through the calling credit page for your Google Account.

Users will have to add call credit to the Google account ahead of time and can only make one call at a time. Further, the offer is subject to abuse limits, so if you’re making a lot of calls every day, some of those calls may not be eligible for the offer. You’ll also need the Hangouts dialer application.
