Uber Toronto adding in-cab Spotify support on November 21st

One of the downsides to taking a cab is that you often don’t get to pick the music. It’s not a huge issue, especially when the trips are short, but it can grate if you jump into a cab blaring loud rock music when you’re more in the mood for something low-key.

Uber is hoping to solve the problem with a new partnership with Spotify. The music streaming service has announced that Uber users that also have Spotify subscriptions will be able to choose the music for their cab rides. This includes picking the music you want to be playing when your ride arrives.

All you have to do is connect your Spotify and Uber accounts through the Uber application on your phone and then request a ride. If your cab is compatible with the new service (a “music-enabled Uber” is what Spotify is calling these cars), you’ll be able to select your music before the car arrives. And yes, there’s also the ability to backseat DJ all the way to your destination. We’re sure the cab drivers will love that.

This new Spotify integration will be available for Uber users on iOS and Android but will require Spotify Premium. It starts rolling out on November 21 but will be limited to 10 cities (London, San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, Mexico City, Nashville, Singapore, Stockholm, Toronto and Sydney). A global roll out will continue over the coming weeks.

To celebrate the launch, there will also be special shows from musical artists as well as in-car ride-alongs in certain cities. Participating artists include Andrew W.K., The Sam Willows, Ximena Sariñana, Ansiktet, Professor Green, Diplo, Matt and Kim, Ricki Lee, Kevin Drew and Jake Owen. Spotify has promised more details surrounding these launch-day festivities in the coming days.
