Basis Peak coming to Canada mid-December, adding smartwatch features and heart rate streaming

Intel’s newest health and fitness company, Basis, will bring its newest tracker, Peak, to Canada in mid-December. Vancouver-based Basis was purchased by chipmaker Intel in March as part of its wearables push.

Available exclusively online at Best Buy and Future Shop, Basis Peak features an always-on heart rate monitor that, with an update, will now be able to share that information with third-party apps like RunKeeper, Strava and Endomondo.

The tracker features a touchscreen e-ink display with up to four days of battery life. An update coming in mid-December will allow it to communicate with iOS and Android devices, too, delivering notifications like incoming phone calls, messages, meeting requests and more. Similar to Pebble in this regard, Peak users won’t be able to action notifications like they can with an Android Wear device, but the functionality is good enough for basic smartwatch-like features.

Peak will also be sold with a number of fitness-optimized straps in a variety of colours to complement the band’s two existing colour options, black and white.

Basis Peak’s Canadian price has not been revealed, but its $199.99USD cost leads us to believe it will be in the $219 to $229 range.
