Sony Smartwatch 3 now available from Google Play for $279.99 CAD

Sony’s latest smartwatch salvo, the Smartwatch 3, is now available from the Google Play Store for $279.99 CAD.

The only Android Wear-powered smartwatch to ship (in Canada) with a GPS radio, the Smartwatch 3 can track location data without being connected to a smartphone, which works great with a recent Android Wear update to allow offline music playback over Bluetooth.

The Smartwatch 3 features a 1.6-inch 320×320 pixel TFT LCD display, a 1.2Ghz Snapdragon 400 SoC, 512MB RAM, 4GB internal storage, Bluetooth 4.1 and a 420mAh battery. That cell size makes it one of the longest-lasting Android Wear smartwatches on the market, and should go well with its offline proclivities. The device is also IP68 water- and dust-proof, meaning it can be submersed in water up to 1m for 30 minutes.

The Smartwatch 3 also features exchangeable bands, more easily changed than regular watches thanks to a unique clasp mechanism. The fact that the smartwatch module itself is not tethered to a strap means that it can be worn in a number of ways.

Whether Sony can capture some of the untapped Android Wear market not yet scooped up by Samsung, LG or Motorola remains to be seen, but Sony’s health focus could be the distinguishing feature for potential buyers.

The smartwatch ships in 1-2 days from Google’s warehouses. Anyone interested?
