iOS 8 adoption is still lagging behind that of iOS 7

Apple’s latest App Store distribution data shows that the majority of iOS devices are now running the latest version of iOS. As of November 24th, 95% of devices are running iOS 7 or later. A full 60% are running iOS 8 already. Not bad considering it has only been available for a couple of months.

Still, iOS 8 adoption is not as fast as it could be. We reported in October that adoption was about 10% behind that of iOS 7 this time last year. One month on, Apple has only added 4% to the iOS users column. In early November of last year, iOS 7 was running on 44% of devices. By the end of December it was running on just shy of 80% of devices.

One of the reasons users may be holding off is the fact that the update itself is fairly chunky 5GB. If you’ve had your 16GB iPhone for a year or more, you probably don’t have room for the update without deleting some of the music, video, or photos you have stored on your device. At that point it’s easy to just say, “Oh, whatever.” And 8GB iPhone 5C users? Oof, good luck with that.
