Montreal launches app to tell you when to move your car for the snowplows

The City of Montreal has launched a new website and mobile application to help keep residents informed of ploughing schedules. The app, dubbed Info-Niege, offers updates on cleared streets using colour-coded roads.

The app currently only displays information for five of Montreal’s 19 boroughs. If you’re in an area that’s covered by the app (Ahuntsic-Cartierville, CĂ´te-des-Neiges—Notre-Dame-de-Grâce, Mercier—Hochelaga-Maisonneuve, Ville-Marie, and Villeray—Saint-Michel—Parc-Extension) you’ll see one of five different colours on the streets: blue for “snowy,” green for “plowed,” red for “no parking,” yellow for “loading expected,” and grey for “waiting for information.”

You can also search by area, save locations, click on a road for more information, opt in for push notifications for when the status of a road changes, and view all of the free parking provided by the City of Montreal during snow removal.

The bad news is that, according to the Montreal Gazette, the app only updates every three to four hours, so you might encounter issues where a specific street is showing as snowy blue when it should be plowed green. People have apparently already complained about this very issue on social media. However, if the no parking red routes can save you a towing, then that’s pretty nifty.

The app is only available for iOS and Android at the moment (sorry BlackBerry and Windows Phone users), but there is a web map available for those without a supported phone.
