Hands-on with the beautifully simple Withings Activité Pop connected watch

Withings Activite

There are few products at CES that one would consider elegant, but the Withings Activité Pop is one of them.

A new smartwatch announced this week by the French connected devices company sports a design that rivals the best analog faces from Swiss watchmakers, but comes with a $150 USD price tag and activity tracking. Unfortunately, there is no notification support.

A pared-down version of the $450 Activité, the Pop delivers most of the same internal features without the leather strap and expensive sapphire glass.

The main hands tell the time, and stay synced to an iOS device (with Android support coming soon). Because there is no LCD display, the Activité Pop’s battery lasts eight months, and is easily replaceable at any jeweller.

Available in a number of colours, the metal-and-glass setup sports a rubberized band that is optimized for optimized for the water-resistant chassis.

Like other activity trackers, the Pop displays a user’s steps on a second hand that scales to whatever goal one chooses in the app (it shows 0-100%, not a set number). Activity is uploaded wirelessly to the companion app through Bluetooth 4.0, and Withings has integrated automated run and swim detection, so users don’t have to manually enter that information.

It’s unclear at this point whether the Pop will come to Canada, but it’s likely to hit Best Buy sometime mid-year.
