Hexoskin launches biometric smart shirt for children and teenage athletes

Hexoskin Junior

Montreal-based Hexoskin has launched a new biometric smart shirt this week at CES 2015. While Hexoskin’s wearable tech has been used recently by Canadian Olympians, the new Hexoskin Junior is designed for children and teenagers.

Like the adult model, Hexoskin Junior provides real-time biometrics tracked during physical training, sleep, and daily activities. In addition to standard tracking metrics like heart rate, step count, sleep duration and calories burned, Hexoskin Junior also measures heart rate recovery, heart rate variability, breathing rate, breathing volume, activity level, and acceleration. The advanced tracking should give youth athletic programs the potential for professional-grade analytics.

“Our future hockey champs have been wearing Hexoskin Junior for a few months now,” said Stéphane Goyette, President of Goyette 360 Hockey training camp. “It’s fascinating to see how much biometric data we can record on these youth’s while they progress throughout their training sessions. Viewing their own data in real time truly motivates them to go that extra mile. We wish this technology had existed earlier!”

Hexoskin has taken a unique approach to its wearable tech, working with NASA and the Canadian Space Agency to create sensors made out of textile, eliminating the need for bulky hardware. The Hexoskin Junior features only a small bluetooth device kept in a built-in side pocket to track the information obtained by the fabric sensors.

Hexoskin is taking pre-orders for its Hexoskin Junior, which retails for $149.
