Motorola promises Lollipop update for 2013 and 2014 Moto users “really soon”

Motorola has promised users that they will see a Lollipop upgrade ‘really soon.’ Luciano Carvalho, principal staff software engineer at Motorola, took to Google+ to ensure users that they won’t have to wait too much longer to get their hands on Android 5.0.

Carvalho confirmed that some Motorola users have already received Lollipop but explained that this is part of a soak test in preparation for a full rollout. “The update will be pushed to a wider audience if no critical showstoppers are found by users who already received it,” Carvalho said on Monday.

Motorola has already confirmed that the 2013 and 2014 versions of the Moto G and Moto X will get Lollipop, as well as the Moto E and the Droid Ultra/Maxx/Mini/Turbo. The bad news is that we don’t know when, exactly, Motorola plans to roll out Lollipop. The good news is that there is something you can do in the meantime. Carvalho says anyone with a first generation Moto product will need to have the latest Motorola Update Services from the Play Store. This should show in your list of available app updates. If it doesn’t, it should be on the way.

Last week, Google updated its monthly Android distribution chart with its latest numbers for version marketshare. Lollipop, with less than 0.1% distribution, has yet to make it onto the pie chart. Meanwhile, version 2.2, aka Froyo, still sits at 0.4% despite the fact that it is almost five years old.
