Google’s Tango graduates out of ATAP division

Earlier this month, Google announced plans to transition the Glass team from Google X to the company’s home automation division. Now another of Google’s experimental projects is on the move.

Project Tango, the 3D motion-tracking technology Google has been developing for use in smartphones and tablets, is transitioning from the company’s Advanced Technology and Projects (ATAP) group. A note on the official ATAP Google+ page reveals that after two years “and many technical successes” the Tango team is moving to a new home inside Google.

Google offered no additional information on what the team will be doing except to say that the company was “excited about the continued commitment to developing the technology for [its] users.”

Despite the similar language, this announcement doesn’t seem to be the end of Project Tango. We got a hands-on with Project Tango at Google I/O last June and were pretty impressed with the technology and LG has already confirmed plans to release a consumer-level Project Tango device this year.
