Corning developing a “sapphire-like scratch resistance” display

Corning is commonly known today now for providing manufacturers with Gorilla Glass, a damage-resistant display that is found on smartphones, tablets, wearables and TV’s. Now in its fourth iteration, Gorilla Glass 4 offers better drop protection, improved scratch-resistance capabilities and a new antimicrobial glass cover that cuts down on the spread of bacteria.

However, Corning is preparing itself for the day that Apple abandons Gorilla Glass for Sapphire Glass in its devices, as President James Clappin teased a new product dubbed as “Project Phire” that will be scratch-resistance like Sapphire.

Clappin stated, “Corning’s continued advancements in cover glass technologies include Gorilla Glass 4 as well as glass material enhancements for improved scratch-resistance, 3D shaping, and several other surface capabilities. We have developed a new product that will provide sapphire-like scratch resistance while maintaining the legendary toughness and break resistance of Gorilla Glass.”

Corning gave no impression of when Project Fire would see the light of day, but CES has always been the unveiling of the new version of Gorilla Glass so you could potentially mark your calendar for January 2016.
