Google offering $6 in credits for every owned Chromecast

Chromecast

You do know that Google is giving away 90 days of free Google Play Music with every Chromecast purchase? The company has been doing that since the HDMI dongle was released last year.

This week, Google began issuing $6 Play Store credits to Chromecast owners — for each Chromecast connected to an account — so customers can rent a movie (or two) through the company’s content portal.

While it’s unclear whether Google intends to replace the Chromecast with a newer version at some point — Google claims to have sold 10 million units so far — it is serious about getting them into as many homes as possible.

Google has been pushing its Cast API, which is built into its Android TV platform, into as many places as it can, including previously “dumb” televisions. To extend Cast’s reach even further, it has partnered with Sony to put Android TV on every Bravia television sold this year.

During CES this year, Google also announced Cast for Audio, a new music-focused version of its Cast API that integrates directly into connected music players.
