Google and Mattel reimagine the View-Master for the VR generation

Google has teamed up with Mattel, the famous toy brand, to recreate the View-Master, one of the most well-known “wearables” of the 20th century.

Compatible with Google Cardboard, the DIY virtual reality platform unveiled at Google I/O last year, Mattel will be marketing the $29.99 accessory to children along with a select number of virtual “reels” for $14.99. These add-on packs will be optimized for the Android devices on which Cardboard relies — hence the low price point — and fit for children of various ages.

While Cardboard has not seen significant adoption among mainstream users, the combination of a low price point, child-friendly content and a well-known brand like Mattel could give it the boost it needs.

The new View-Master will be available this fall.
