Huawei’s newest phablet has a 7-inch screen

When Samsung announced the Galaxy Note 2 in September of 2012, many thought the company had lost its marbles. It was even bigger than the original Note! Five months later, at CES 2013, Huawei trotted out the Ascend Mate, a 6-inch phone that showed the company didn’t care what we thought. This was a phablet.

Fast forward a couple of years, and the Note has grown to 5.7 inches and a 6-inch phablet doesn’t seem so odd, especially now that Google has one. Clearly, if Huawei was to keep its reputation for building gargantuan phones in check, it needed to go bigger. Enter the MediaPad X1, a phablet with 7-inch display that was announced at MWC last year.

Huawei has brought the MediaPad line back to Barcelona for MWC 2015 with the MediaPad X2, a phone with a fully laminated 7-inch 1200×1920 IPS display, a 2.0 GHz Kirin 930 SoC with a 64-but octa-core CPU, 64-bt Mali-T628 graphics, 2GB/3GB of RAM, 16GB/32GB of storage, a 13MP camera in back, a 5MP camera up front, and a massive 5,000mAh battery to power the whole show.

Huawei hasn’t talked about availability, but it’s unlikely this phone is ever coming to Canada. WIND Mobile has sold both versions of the Ascend Mate but the MediaPad X1 never made it. We don’t expect to see its successor either.
