SanDisk announces $400 200GB MicroSD card for Android phones

AT MWC 2014, SanDisk was enthusiastically pushing its newly announced record-breaking 128GB MicroSD card. Just 12 months later, the company has upped the ante with a 200GB solution.

The 200GB SanDisk Ultra MicroSDXC UHS-I card Premium Edition is exactly the same size as last year’s record-breaking 128GB MicroSD card and SanDisk says its huge capacity is only possible thanks to proprietary technology developed for the production of the 128GB card (though it stops short of providing any details on that technology).

This isn’t just a boost in capacity, though. Last year’s card offered transfer speeds of up to 48MB/s but SanDisk claims that the 200GB version announced this week is capable of transfer speeds up to 90MB/s. That’s 1,200 photos per minute, according to SanDisk.

Like the 128GB model, SanDisk is pitching this mighty card to Android users. The company cites IDC in reporting that by 2019, nine out of 10 photos will be captured on a smartphone. With this card, users can store thousands of photos, hours of HD video, without worrying about transferring the content off their phone and onto a larger capacity device like a laptop or even the cloud.

The only problem with that angle is that more OEMs are dropping support for external storage in exchange for more compact builds every year. These days, it’s not cost of additional storage that’s the issue, it’s the increasing trend towards ‘what you buy is what you get’ smartphone storage capacities.

Pricing for this 200GB MicroSDXC is a whopping $399.99. It will be available in Q2. That’s double what the 128GB cost at launch.
