HTC has another “huge” announcement coming later this month

We would have figured that, after MWC, the folks at HTC would be pretty tired. The company launched multiple new products at the conference, including its 2015 flagship smartphone, a new VR headset, and its first wearable device in the form of the Grip. However, it seems HTC isn’t done with us yet.

BusinessInsider reports that the company has another big announcement coming later this month. The president of HTC’s Americas division, Jason Mackenzie, told the site that the One M9 is ‘the most premium’ device but that the company has an announcement coming that will solve ‘key pain points’ around HTC’s “differentiation between Samsung and the iPhone.” Full quote below:

“When I look at the flagship [the M9], I see we’re building the most premium device,” Mackenzie said. “But I can’t stop there. We have a huge announcement in middle to late march around extreme differentiation between Samsung and the iPhone. It solves key pain points.”

We’ve seen fresh reports of a larger, phablet-style HTC One M9 since the One M9’s official unveiling, so Mackenzie could be talking about plans to offer something for phablet fans drawn to Samsung’s Note Plus and the iPhone 6 Plus. However, BusinessInsider believes the company could be prepping an iCloud competitor.

That would be a pretty bold move. HTC would be entering a space crowded with well-established competitors (Google Drive, Dropbox, Box, and OneDrive, to name a few), and a phone would make more sense. That said, we’ve seen a concentrated effort from HTC to branch out and diversify its product portfolio with the Re line of accessors (which now includes the Camera, the Vive, and the Grip), so perhaps the cloud is the company’s next destination.
