YouTube gets support for 360-degree videos on Android

Google is no stranger to showing us 360-degree content — we’ve been exploring foreign cities and countries via Street View for years. Now the company is expanding support for 360 imagery to another one of its most popular services.

The company today announced via the YouTube blog that it is adding support for 360 video uploads and viewing on YouTube. You’ll need the right equipment to capture this content, obviously, but if you have a Bublcam, Kodak’s SP360, Giroptic’s 360cam or another type of 360-degree video camera, you’ve already got a head-start. Google explains that you’ll need to also run a script on the video file in order to get the right metadata but that this process should be automatic eventually.

This addition comes at a time when many companies are pushing more immersive video experiences, like VR, AR, or both. The good news is that viewers don’t need anything new to enjoy 360-degree content. All you need to do is load up the video on your Android phone and move your device around to see different parts of the scene. Check out the video below to get a taste for how the content looks:
