Diablo spiritual successor Torchlight is coming to Android and iOS

Torchlight Mobile

Announced over the weekend, Torchlight Mobile, the latest game from Runic Games, is coming to mobile devices sometime in the feature.

Details are sparse, but if the company’s past release history is any indication, Torchlight Mobile should be a hack and slash role playing game (check out the trailer below to get a sense of past entries in the series). Beyond a name and some concept art, Runic hasn’t published any information on a release date and platform availability, though at this point I think it’s safe to say that the game will arrive on Android and iOS.

For those that are interested in a bit of history, Runic Games was co-founded brothers Max and Erich Schafer, the same two individuals that started the studio that was responsible for the creation of Diablo, Diablo II and Diablo II: Lord of Destruction. In 2005, Blizzard North, their original studio, was closed down by its parent company and the two men went on to start Runic to begin work on a spiritual successor to Diablo.

One of the first things they made sure to do was to hire the help of Matt Uelmen, the same gentleman who crafted this timeless tune. Their first release, Torchlight, was a critical and commercial success, and it garnered a lot of praise for bringing interesting improvements to the age old hack and slash formula that the two man had helped pioneer all the way back in 1996. Runic quickly followed up the release of Torchlight with a sequel called Torchlight 2.

The company had talked several about doing a MMO in the Torchlight universe, but it looks like they’ve decided a mobile game is a more manageable project for a small indie studio.
