MTS to shutter legacy CDMA network next year

Manitoba Telecom Services will begin the process of reducing and finally shutting off its legacy CDMA network by the end of 2016.

MTS launched a 4G HSPA+ network in early 2011 with a goal of replacing its CDMA network at an undisclosed point in the future. The move came after Bell and Telus also transitioned to HSPA technology in 2009, reducing the number of available CDMA handsets. The company then launched its 4G LTE network in 2012.

MTS notes that beginning this month some individual sites will be decommissioned, with all CDMA towers switching to LTE by the end of 2016.

Bell and Telus are each expected to shutter their own CDMA networks by the end of 2017.
