Uber believes Toronto is the “perfect city” for UberPool

Back in February, Uber was tipped to unveil UberPool in Toronto. Uberpool is an extension of its app that allows users to pick up passengers along the way to their destination. The gist is that it offers a way for riders reduce the cost of their ride by carpooling, with an almost 50% discount from the base UberX fare.

According to the Star, Uber drivers in Toronto were informed last week to complete the online training for UberPool as the service could be launching soon. Ian Black, Uber Canada’s general manager, stated, “It takes some time to get there, but we are very much looking at rolling this out in Toronto in the near future. We think Toronto is the perfect city and the perfect use case.”

The service is already live in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Paris. “We don’t have a date at this point,” said Black. “Pan Am is a great time. So is a regular Monday in the summer… We definitely need high occupancy. It doesn’t make sense that most car trips only have one person in them.”

The last time Uber launched a service in Toronto was its food delivery option, UberEats. Two week prior to going live, Uber sent messages to its drivers indicating it was “exploring the idea of launching a lunch-delivery product within the Uber app.” Fourteen days later, UberEats was a reality in Toronto.

Perhaps with the Pan Am games kicking off on July 10th Torontonians will also see UberPool come to life and also a slight reduction in road rage.
