Force Touch on the iPhone 6s will enable ‘shortcut’ actions in apps and the home screen

Rumours of Apple bringing Force Touch to the next iPhones — likely called the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus — have been swirling for months. Force Touch is a technology developed by Apple that includes pressure-sensitive sensors under the display. To date, it has been integrated into the Apple Watch and various MacBooks.

The latest report by 9to5Mac reveals that Force Touch will operate in a different manner on the iPhone to the Watch or laptops. According to its source, “Force Touch on the iPhone is designed to skip existing lists of options or button presses. There is consistent usage of Force Touch across the operating system to ‘shortcut’ actions, rather than present new options like with the Apple Watch.”

Force Touch on the iPhone will allow users in in Maps, Music, and various apps on the home screen to access secondary content more quickly. For example, using Force Touch within Maps will immediately bring up turn-by-turn directions, skipping a number of steps; while in Music users can long press and save the track to a playlist or download it for offline listening.

In addition, a feature that is still reportedly in testing is the ability to Force Touch an app icon from the home screen to skip straight to a particular part of the app. “If a user deep presses on the Phone app icon, he could choose to shortcut directly to the Voicemail tab,” said the report.

Apple is expected to unveil the new iPhones on September 9th. The new smartphones are rumoured to have the same 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch displays, an upgraded A9 processor, 2GB of RAM, and a 12MP camera.
