Facebook is reportedly preparing to launch a Twitter-like news app

Facebook is working on a Twitter-like mobile app that will deliver short news blasts to users of its social network, according to Business Insider.

Citing an unnamed source, the publications says that Facebook is testing the app with several prominent publications.

Additional details are scarce, but users will apparently need to download a new app to use the service. Once they’ve downloaded the app, users will be able to subscribe to a select group of news outlets and a series of topics from each one of them.

When breaking news occurs, the app will send out an alert. Each alert will be apparently limited to 100 characters and will include a link to the original article on the publication’s website.

The scope of the app is apparently limited to start, with only several prominent publications set as launch partners. What’s interesting about the Business Insider report is that it doesn’t mention Facebook’s recent Instant Articles initiative. One would think the company would try to tie together the two platforms, especially because there’s a natural synergy between them. What is clear that Facebook is serious about becoming a media powerhouse.
