Jolla tablet now available to pre-order

Jolla Tablet

After a massively successful crowdfunding campaign that raised $2,553,652 USD, the Jolla tablet is now available to pre-order in Canada via the company’s online store.

Created by a team of former Nokia engineers and developers, the slim 8.3mm thin tablet features a 1.8 GHz quad coreĀ Intel Baytrail processor, a 4450mAh battery,Ā 5 megapixel and 2 megapixel front and rear-facing cameras, 2GB of RAM and a 7.85-inch 2048 by 1536 pixel display that is fully laminated.

More so than the hardware, however, what’s most interesting about the Jolla tablet is its operating system, Sailfish OS 2.0. Built on a base of Nokia’s MeeGo mobile operating system, Sailfish is an open source operating system that the Jolla team built to be focused on multi-tasking, privacy and performance. It has a unique task manager that shows all currently open apps in one window, and includes a featureĀ called Ambience that allows the user to change the look and feel of their tablet on the fly.Ā It’s also capable of running Android apps, so the prospect of trying out a relatively unknown operating system is somewhat mitigated. Lastly, Jolla says its platforms is extremely secure, with no back doors for government agencies to exploit.

The Jolla tablet is available in 32GB and 64GB variants, with quantities of both versions said to be limited. They’ve being sold forĀ 267ā‚¬ andĀ 299ā‚¬, respectively. In Canadian Dollars, that’s aboutĀ $391 and $438.
