Moto X 2013 and HTC One M9 receive new Stagefright updates

Moto X 2013

Original Moto X 2013 users on Rogers have started to receive a minor update that includes a fix for Stagefright, the recently disclosed MMS bug that affects the majority of Android devices.

Despite being disclosed on July 27, a significant number of smartphones have yet to receive an update to eliminate their vulnerability to the potentially devastating bug.

Thanks to Telus, though, we know the approximate date when several devices will receive the all important security update. If all goes according to plan, the carrier hopes to start rolling out a new Stagefright fix for the HTC One M9 sometime today. The fix was supposed to be bundled in with that phone’s Android 5.1 update, which was issued toward the end of August, so to see Telus planning a second Stagefright update is surprising, to say the least. We’ve reached out to the company to find out more.

In four days time, on September 28, Telus likewise plans to shore up the Sony Xperia Z1 against its Stagefright vulnerability. Interestingly, the company also has plans to release a Stagefright fix for the Z30’s Android player. Like the One M9 fix, that update is scheduled to roll out today.
