John Chen: ‘BlackBerry is a new company. We have new life’

“BlackBerry is a new company. We have new life.”

Those were the words that BlackBerry CEO John Chen penned for an op-ed published this morning on CNBC. Despite dismal Q2 results, Chen and company appear optimistic, and it’s all thanks to their newest device, the BlackBerry Priv, which was announced this morning.

“Priv will be the solution for smartphone users who are learning daily of the lack of privacy they have on their current devices,” said the executive in his piece. “Priv will be the answer for former BlackBerry users who miss the physical keyboard but needed apps.”

The real question that Chen and BlackBerry have to answer is why they’ve decided to release an Android device. In response to this question, Chen said, “Launching an Android device is a tremendous new market opportunity as we continue our focus on building a cross-platform strategy. It’s a terrific proposition for dedicated Android users who are seeking greater productivity and powerful privacy features.”

While the specs of the Priv were not released, it’s expected that it will have a 5.4-inch dual-curved screen display with a Snapdragon 808 processor and an 18-megapixel camera.

Chen also said there is still, “continued demand for our flagship BlackBerry 10 devices,” even though the company only sold 800,000 this quarter, a decrease from 1.1 million it sold during the previous quarter.

“They’re not going away,” Chen reiterated about his company’s BlackBerry 10 device lineup. “BlackBerry is a new company. We have new life. And we plan to continue to surprise our customers and the industry. This is just the latest move along that path.”
