Apple acquires VocalIQ to make Siri more conversational

CarPlay

Apple has confirmed it has acquired U.K.-based artificial intelligence startup VocalIQ. While the details of the transaction are not known, Apple did comment that it “buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans.”

VocalIQ has developed machine learning technology that’s currently embedded in mobile devices and cars that allows for a more natural conversation with virtual assistants. On its site, VocalIQ states, “We’ve been working on the development of a smart platform that learns your natural conversation flow – and uses it to control your devices. Our aim is to augment and impact our experiences with machine interaction – changing every aspect of everyday lives.”

It is rumoured that Apple will use VocalIQ’s tech to improve Siri, with an eye to integrating it into CarPlay. Apple has also been rumoured to be working on a car-related special project, possibly an electric or self-driving car, called Project Titan.
