The first-generation Chromecast can now stream music from Spotify

Chromecast

Good news, first-generation Chromecast owners — after a seemingly interminable wait, you can know use the Google-built streaming stick to listen to music on Spotify.

The feature addition comes via a firmware update the company started rolling out earlier today.

If your unit hasn’t grabbed the update already, you’ll need to reboot it. Restarting the Chromecast can be done by either unplugging it from its power source, or by telling it do so through the Chromecast mobile app.

Note the Spotify support that’s baked into the first-generation Chromecast is actually superior to what’s included with Chromecast Audio. Unlike the latter, which requires the user have a Spotify Premium account, anyone can use the music app on their first generation Chromecast, even those with only a free account.
