Rogers to release fix for problematic Galaxy S6 Android 5.1.1 update on November 16

Samsung Galaxy Note 5

Android updates can often take weeks, or even months, to make it to even the newer devices. Time is taken by carriers to try to ensure that nothing goes wrong during the update process, and that any bugs are caught before the update goes out.

At beginning of October, we reported that Rogers users with a Samsung Galaxy S6 were experiencing issues with calling and SMS on Android 5.1.1. Rogers said at the time that it was a network issue and had been resolved.

However, Rogers now states in their community forum that the Android 5.1.1 update is indeed still causing some users issues, and that a fix will be available on Monday, November 16th. As some customers found, disabling LTE for the time being does seem to alleviate the problem, as the bug appears to come from the way the network “wakes up” from sleep when connected to an LTE network.

The issue affected both the Rogers and Telus versions of the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge running Android 5.1.1 (Bell has yet to issue an update), but Rogers has taken longer to release a patch because of its support for VoLTE. Telus included a fix for the problem with its recent update.

Rogers does not recommend putting non-Rogers software onto devices, as it could affect performance and void your warranty. If you have been experiencing these issues, you can manually force the phone to use HSPA+ connectivity in Settings > Mobile Networks > Network Mode.

The bug fix update will be rolling out in batches starting on November 16th, so look out for that next week. Other carriers may also be affected, so give the temporary fix a try if you’re encountering the same problems.
