OnePlus releases OxygenOS 2.1.2 OTA update, details Marshmallow update plans

OnePlus 2

OnePlus has started to rollout a new over-the-air update for the OxygenOS powered OnePlus 2 and OnePlus X.

Despite sharing the same version number, OxygenOS 2.1.2, the update adds different functionality to each device. The OnePlus 2, for instance, sees the addition of a new user experience within its camera app, while the OnePlus X receives optimizations relating to its low battery performance.

Both full change logs can be seen below:

OnePlus 2

  • Improved UX for preview in Camera
  • Performance improvements on app install and launch
  • Individual icon customization support
  • Fixes for RAW format on 3rd party camera apps
  • Russian & Turkish language support
  • Lockscreen wallpaper support
  • Security patches
  • Bug fixes to System Update to improve OTA stability
  • General bug fixes and performance improvements

OnePlus X

  • UX bug fixes in the Camera app

  • Bug fixes to System Update to improve OTA stability
  • System optimizations in low battery state
  • General bug fixes and performance improvements

In addition, the Chinese smartphone startup has released a tentative timeline for the rollout of Android Marshmallow to its current family of smartphones.

The company’s first device, the OnePlus One, which runs Cyanogen OS, will be updated to Marshmallow during the first quarter of 2016, says company co-founder Carl Pei in a post on the company’s forum. Moreover, if there was any doubt regarding the complete deterioration of a working between OnePlus and Cyanogen, OnePlus One owners will in the near future be able to move their device from Cyanogen OS to the company’s own OxygenOS using a soon-to-be-release community build.

The OnePlus 2 will likewise make the jump to Android 6.0 sometime in Q1 2016. Moreover, as part of the update, the OnePlus 2 specifically and OxygenOS generally will take advantage of Marshmallow’s systemwide fingerprint API. OnePlus says it considered porting its current fingerprint implementation to Marshmallow, but decided in favour of using something more standard.

Lastly, for its latest device, the OnePlus X, the company says it will update the smartphone to Marshmallow as “soon as possible”. Unfortunately, OnePlus doesn’t provide more precise information than that, but does note it will share more specific details at a later date.
