Google Phone and Contacts apps now available to download from the Play Store (Update)

Google Contacts

Continuing its practice of separating core apps from Android and uploading them to the Play Store, Google has added its Caller and Contacts apps to Android’s app marketplace.

Unfortunately, if you don’t already have these apps installed on your device, you won’t be able to download them now. On the bright side, both Caller and Contacts will now be updated outside of major system upgrades.

To coincide with the move, Google has pushed updates to both programs, though it appears only those with Nexus devices running Marshmallow will be able to grab them.

The Contacts app, now at version 1.3, adds “streamlined editing”. Without access to one of the new Nexus devices, I wasn’t able to see what that exactly that entails, though according to Android Police, one of the new changes is that anyone with multiple Google accounts can now set a default account for adding new contacts.

The dialler app, on the other hand, received a handful of more substantial changes. In addition to parts of the app’s user interface being redesigned, Google has, at long last, added the option for users to block a call. Caller will also now pull and use contact nicknames from Google Now.

Update: For whatever reason, it appears Google has pulled the apps from the Play Store. We’ll update this article once we find out more.

Update #2 – December 7th: Google has finally brought these two apps to Google Store and users can now go forth and download. Here are the links: Phone [Google Play Store] and Contacts [Google Play Store]
