Sony finalizes $155 million purchase of Toshiba’s image sensor facility

Sony’s smartphones aren’t helping the company make money, but that doesn’t mean the tech giant doesn’t have other strengths in the mobile industry. For instance, Apple, Google and Xiaomi utilize the company’s image sensors in several of their products, and today Sony is finalizing another move to cement its position in the high-end mobile camera market.

Sony has finalized a deal to acquire Toshiba‘s image sensor business for $155 million. This includes a semiconductor plant, equipment and approximately 1100 employees involved in CMOS image sensor engineering and design. The news first broke in late October.

The facilities and personnel will be moved to a subsidiary, Sony Semiconductor Corp., with the transfer expected to be completed by the end of March 2016.
