WhatsApp may soon support video calling

It looks like Google is not the only company working to up its chat offering; messaging mainstay WhatsApp is reportedly preparing to add video calling to its popular app, according to German website Macerkopf.

The Apple-focused website published what it claims is a screenshot (seen above) of the functionality in action within a beta version of the app. Given that WhatsApp owner Facebook implemented video calling into its own chat offering, Facebook Messenger, several months ago, it’s not far fetched that WhatsApp would follow suit.

As The Next Web notes, WhatsApp implementation of video calling looks pretty barebones. One icon allows the users to switch between their smartphone’s front- and rear-facing camera, while the other one functions as a mute button.

Macerkopf says it believes WhatsApp will release the functionality sometime in the next few weeks.
