Oculus cofounder says lack of Rift pricing info is ‘standard practice’ in the tech industry

“This is standard practice in the consumer electronics industry,” writes Oculus founder Palmer Luckey in a recent Reddit post responding to fans wondering why the Oculus Rift’s January 6th pre-order date doesn’t include a final price tag.

“The price is almost always announced alongside preorders. Phones, game consoles, they all do it this way – it is kind of weird to see people thinking it is some kind of special sign about anything!” writes Luckey.

As Luckey states, the final price of the Oculus Rift will be revealed when pre-orders go live later this week. Cost predictions range between $350 USD and $700 USD. The price of a PC capable of running the Oculus Rift costs between $950 and $1500.

While Luckey has a point, given the Oculus Rift is set to be the first fully-fledged consumer VR headset to hit the market, speculation regarding the device’s price should be expected. Whatever Facebook-owned Oculus decides to charge for the Rift will likely set the tone for the rest of the virtual reality industry.
