MediaTek unveils integrated low-power chip package for wearables

As wearable technology advances, batteries and processors are going to need to continue to become smaller and more efficient. Several companies, including Samsung, have been working on processors that have the ability to provide a variety of health data to wearable devices.

MediaTek announced this week what the company calla a SiP (system-in-package) for wearables, combining GPS, Bluetooth and a display support into a small, but powerful package. MediaTek claims advanced wearables powered by the new module, the MT2523, will be able to run for up to a week on a single charge. The package also comes in at almost half the size of solutions the competition is currently using.

The package is powered by an ARM Cortex-M4 processor, which combines low component cost and power use with high efficiency. MediaTek says the SiP will be available to manufacturers beginning in the first half of this year.
