BlackBerry claims it’s still committed to supporting BB10

Despite discussing plans to release multiple Android smartphone over the course of the year, BlackBerry says the company is still committed to its own proprietary BlackBerry 10 operating system.

“At CES 2016, BlackBerry has been busy discussing self-driving cars, global carrier support for Priv and consumer healthcare apps. But as we shift our energies toward all these exciting opportunities, does that mean the BlackBerry 10 operating system is dead? Far from it,” writes BlackBerry CEO John Chen in a recent blog post.

Chen says that despite the company’s move towards devices that utilize Google’s Android operating system, BlackBerry is still committed to supporting BlackBerry 10 smartphones such as the Passport and Classic. In the post, Chen says that the next version of BB10, 10.3.3, will be certified for NIAP compliance, which reportedly means it will be put through “the strictest government-grade security tests.”

According to BlackBerry, these additional tests allow the company to provide a more secure environment for its government customers that require high levels of security with their mobile devices.

Chen also says that while the company will continue to work on BlackBerry 10 in 2016, it still has plans to continue developing Android-based smartphones like the well-received BlackBerry Priv.

“We’ll share more details about our roadmap when we’re ready,” writes Chen.
