Kik adds branded GIFs to its messaging arsenal

Waterloo-based Kik recently received a massive $50-million investment from Tencent, makers of WeChat. The messaging app then expanded its reach by acquiring Toronto-based Blynk, a fashion app that allows users to discover new clothing items.

In November, Kik launched its GIF emoji keyboard and today has followed it up with branded GIFs, which the company says is an “interesting opportunity to enhance the GIF experience with fun and timely content.” The first two GIFs are Zoolander No. 2, which opens on February 12th, and the World Wildlife Fund with funny animal reactions.

Paul Gray, product strategist at Kik, stated to TechCrunch that additional branded GIFs are coming, but the company is being “very careful with how we roll things out. We do a lot of updates to [our overall library of] GIFs based on seasonality. [With branded GIFs] we wanted to be very careful [and] talk to exciting brand partners.”

Kik users simply need to search its GIF search engine and access the Zoolander or WWF GIFs.
