Galaxy Note 6 will reportedly include an iris scanner

New rumours have surfaced about Samsung’s forthcoming Note 6, including hints the device may include iris-scanning technology.

Samsung blog Galaxy Club reports that on April 6 a delivery marked “Iris Cam (Parts for Samsung Mobile),” was received by the company’s R&D centre in India. There is speculation this new technology may be included in Samsung’s next flagship device, the Note 6, which is expected to come out in August.

This is not the first time it’s come to light that Samsung is experimenting with iris-scanning technology. Three months before the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, The Wall Street Journal revealed, according to internal sources within the company, Samsung was considering including a retinal scanner in the device, but speculated the feature would have to be dropped due to the nearing deadline. The fact that the technology was advanced enough for consideration lends credence to the idea that the Note 6 might actually include the feature.

It also wouldn’t be the first time the Note series debuted new and innovative features before Samsung’s headlining S series. The Note edge tested the waters for the S6 edge, and the Note 5 pioneered some aspects of the S7’s always-on display.

Meanwhile, SamMobile reports it has received information confirming that the Galaxy Note 6 will have the same IP68 water-resistance rating as the S7 and S7 edge, making it the first of the Note series to be able to endure a dunk. The IP68 rating means the device will be able to withstand submersion in water up to about five feet deep, for up to half an hour.

Other rumours about the phone surfaced in February via a leak from Weibo user HQ Vision, in which they stated the phablet will include an incredible 6GB of RAM and a 5.8-inch screen.
