Microsoft to cease manufacturing Xbox 360 consoles

It’s the end of an era.

This morning, ten years after it was first released, Microsoft revealed it will stop manufacturing the Xbox 360.

In a letter posted to the Xbox news blog, Phil Spencer, the head of Microsoft’s Xbox division, reminisced about the milestones he and his team achieved over the past 10 years. Gears of War saw its big break on Xbox 360, writes Spencer, and the popular game Halo also found itself during that time.

For anyone who still uses their 360, Microsoft says it will continue to support the console in several ways. The Xbox Live servers that support the console will remain active. Additionally, over 4000 Xbox 360 games will still be available through retail channels and the console’s online store. Microsoft customer support will also continue to assist Xbox 360 gamers with any problems or bugs they may experience.

Lastly, Xbox One gamers can play a number of Xbox 360 games through their console’s recently added backwards compatibility feature.

The existing inventory of Xbox 360 gaming consoles will be sold, and availability will vary based on country.
