Quebec might require all new homes to be built with electric car charging stations

Quebec Minister of Transport Jacques Daoust has confirmed that the province is considering mandating that all new houses must be built with a 240V charging station for electric cars.

Le Journal de Montreal is reporting that these charging stations would raise the prices of homes by approximately $400 – a savings in comparison to self-installation, which is estimated at around $1,000.

The government is also considering furthering the mandate to include both new and existing rental housing. An impact report and decision is expected by the end of the summer.

Currently, Quebec residents own just a little over 8,000 electric cars, but the government has an ambitious target of getting 100,000 on the road by 2020. One of the incentives already on offer is a $600 grant for individuals who want to install a charging station in their pre-existing home.
