Samsung’s Bedtime VR Stories creates a new way for children and parents to share stories

I have two kids. A boy who is almost six and a girl almost two. Both are lovely and definitely have their moments. Raising children has by far been the biggest challenge I’ve ever been faced with.

Technology, however, has made it easier for me to feel somewhat successful at being a great father as the number of available educational tools allows them to have fun while learning. So, to them, I look like I know what I’m talking about.

While my kids love the iPad, virtual reality is a new, exciting space. Many mobile manufacturers have already ventured down this path, specifically LG, HTC, and Samsung with Facebook’s Oculus. In a new video, Samsung has unveiled a new VR app called “Samsung Bedtime VR Stories.” Samsung notes that this app “means parents and children can share a story, even when they’re apart. So it’s no longer ‘once upon a time,’ but rather ‘happily ever after.’

A demo of the app uploaded to YouTube by Samsung shows how a daughter and traveling parent can remotely share an experience at bedtime. “Bedtime VR Stories represents a future facing platform for storytelling. In helping parents and children spend more time together,” says Samsung.

While this all sounds fancy and exciting. As a parent, however, one of the last things I want to give my children before bedtime is access to tech directly in their eyes. They just would not let it go and tantrums would occur.

In addition, if I was away and connected this way to my boy the experience in the moment would be incredible, but the downfall once taking off the VR headset would cause loneliness for him (and I), so much so that the end result would just not be worth it.

Samsung notes Bedtime VR Stories is still in the prototype phase but gives a “small glimpse of Samsung’s vision for VR and technology more widely.”
