New area codes coming to British Columbia, Quebec, New Brunswick and Newfoundland and Labrador

Following the news of the new 548 area code coming to southwestern Ontario this week, the CRTC has announced plans to address projected phone number shortages by adding new area codes in four provinces.

The specific area codes are not yet known but will be used in addition to what is currently active in British Columbia, Quebec, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador.

  • 236, 250, 604 and 778 in British Columbia;
  • 418 and 581 in Quebec;
  • 506 in New Brunswick; and
  • 709 in Newfoundland and Labrador.

With this new plan, New Brunswick and Newfoundland and Labrador will shift away from 7-digit local dialling to 10-digit local dialling.

Unfortunately, the CRTC did not state when the new codes will be in place or when the current area code numbers are estimated to run out.
