A mid-generation upgrade to the PlayStation 4 is in the works, Sony confirmed today.

Andrew House, president and group CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, told the Financial Times Sony is working on a more powerful version of its current video game console hardware, and confirmed the device’s current codename, NeoHouse went on to confirm the device will be capable of 4K video output. However, he also told the Financial Times that Sony will not unveil the console at its E3 keynote next week. He also didn’t provide any information on when the PlayStation Neo may launch, but did say it will cost more than the $350 it retails for in the U.S.

“It is intended to sit alongside and complement the standard PS4,” said House in his interview with the Financial Times. “We will be selling both [versions] through the life cycle.”

“All games will support the standard PS4 and we anticipate all or a very large majority of games will also support the high-end PS4,” House added.

Microsoft is reportedly working on its mid-generation upgrade to the Xbox One. According to Polygon, which broke the news, Microsoft’s current codename for the device is Scorpio, and it is supposed to be significantly more powerful than the current Xbox One and both the existing PlayStation 4 and the as of yet unannounced PlayStation 4 Neo. The company is expected to announce the new console, as well as a new and slimmer version of its current hardware, at its E3 keynote next week.
