Former CBC executive and Twitter Canada head Kirstine Stewart is leaving the company

Kirstine Stewart, Twitter’s vice-president of media, North America, has left the company, a Twitter spokesperson has confirmed to Recode.

Stewart oversaw Twitter’s North American media activities and partnerships in television, sports, gaming, talent, music, fashion, news and government. She is also known for authoring the female leadership-focused book Our Turn.

In her previous role with the company, she held the position of founding head at Twitter Canada, a position she took up in 2013 after leaving her position as executive vice-president and head of CBC English services.

This departure is one of several recent losses for the company’s media team. Twitter’s former vice president of Global Media Katie Stanton left the company in January 2016, and her successor Nathan Hubbard left in May. Joanne Park, Twitter’s head of cable partnerships, and Danny Keens, head of North American sports, both left in June.

These losses no doubt come at an inopportune time for Twitter, which has of late been actively pursuing live video streaming, which requires managing relationships with various big media partners.

Turmoil at the top is not entirely unexpected, however, as Twitter scrambles to address its stagnating user base. Recently it was rumoured that its daily user count had been eclipsed by Snapchat, a platform six years its junior.

Stewart also joined Canadian sports media company TheScore’s board in early June.

Update: Stewart tells the Financial Post she will remain with Twitter for “a bit yet,” and will have more to announce in the future.
