Samsung’s unreleased Exynos 8895 chip is reportedly reaching speeds of 4GHz

According to leaked information that recently popped up on Chinese social networking site Weibo, Samsung is seeing impressive results in tests of its Exynos 8895 chipset, expected to launch in March 2017.

The SoC will reportedly be one of the first to usher in a new era of 10 nanometer (nm) technology. Its big.LITTLE architecture — a method developed by ARM that pairs powerful cores with battery-saving, slower cores — consists of four high-performance custom cores and four low-power Cortex-A53 cores.

The Weibo leakster reports that the high-performance cores are clocking in at the impressive speed of 4GHz, while the lower power cores come in at 2.7GHz. That’s an upper limit performance increase of a third over Samsung’s current 14nm chip, though it should be noted that retail versions would likely be capped lower to avoid overheating issues.

The tipster also alleges that the Exynos 8895 has equivalent energy consumption to the forthcoming Snapdragon 830, though the former is clocking speeds of only 3.6GHz.

This rumour is far from confirmed, of course, but it’s certainly pleasant daydream fodder for Samsung Galaxy S line enthusiasts, who may see the new chip in the S8 when it comes out next year — as long as the Exynos variant comes to Canada, that is.
